How do I setup my e-mail?
Can I read my mail on the web?
How can I send mail when I am away from home? The server rejects my messages!
Right now the best way to accomplish this is to use the
webmail interface to compose the
messages. When you are at a location that is not in the HPC network, we
cannot relay mail for you. Because of the way the mail protocol (SMTP)
works, there is not a simple solution that doesn't leave a server open
to abuse by spammers.
There are some solutions in the works
that will let you use your username and password with one of our mail
servers to allow this in the future, so stay tuned.
I get kicked off of the Internet every time I check my mail, what gives?
The "Hang up after Send & Receive" option in Outlook Express is probably set. To fix it, do this:
- Open Outlook Express
- Click Tools
- Click Options
- Click the Connection tab
- Uncheck "Hang up after Send & Receive"
- Click OK
Why do I get so much spam?
Unfortunately, once a spammer gets your address they will sell it to many others, especially if they have
some indication that it's an active account. HPC does have a spam filter server which checks each incoming
message and blocks quite a lot of spam. Still, some people get enough that bypasses the standard settings
that they need to turn their filter settings up.
No spam filter is perfect, however, so the only real cure is prevention. Never, ever, give out your e-mail
address unless you have to. Notable offenders are e-Card sites, most of which will bombard the sender and recipient
with spam once the card is sent.
How do I login to the Spam Filter?
You can use the link on the left side of the page, or follow this link:
Spam Filter Login.
What's the deal with all the popups and crud on the web?
Unfortunately, there are lots of people out there looking to make money, and that's the biggest motivator.
The best suggestion is to use popup blocking software and regularly scan your PC for spyware with a program
such as
Spybot Search & Destroy or
Ad-Aware.
An even better solution is to use an alternate browser, such as
Firefox or
Opera. Neither of these browsers
are as insecure as Internet Explorer.
